Established by the government in 1981, RIBO is the self-regulatory body that protects the public in their interactions with general insurance brokers across Ontario and regulates the licensing, professional competence, ethical conduct and insurance-related financial obligations of over 22,000 licensees.

The Registered Insurance Brokers of Ontario is governed by a Council of thirteen; nine brokers elected from amongst the profession, and four public members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
Three statutory committees adjudicate decisions relating to Qualifications and Registration, Complaints and Discipline.
